Walmart has big ambitions to grow its digital ad sales while still focusing on its huge in-store reach. Walmart is hoping to use its footprint of 4,700 physical stores to give it a leg up in retail media. Last year, Walmart brought on the seasoned retail media exec Ryan Mayward to steer ad sales to give its advertising arm Walmart Connect a big boost. Mayward previously led ad sales for Instacart and he helped Amazon grow its relationships with ad agencies. Similar to other marketplaces like Amazon and Instacart, search advertising on Walmart.com is a basic part of every brand's advertising plan, he said.

Walmart is selling online apparel brand Eloquii to FullBeauty Brands, marking the retailer's third divestiture of a direct-to-consumer brand this year. The retailer bought Eloquii in 2018 for a reported $100 million, one of numerous digital apparel brands with niche and loyal consumer bases. Fogarty plans for Eloquii to be an anchor in what he calls FullBeauty Brands' "digital mall." After acquiring Eloquii, Walmart created a new brand of inclusive-sized apparel, which the retailer will continue to sell after the divestiture. Walmart's online sales now make up 13% of total annual sales, as of its most recent fiscal year-end, up from 5% in 2019.
Walmart has sold menswear brand Bonobos to brand management firm WHP Global and Express in a $75 million deal announced Thursday. WHP, which took a 60% stake in Express in December, will acquire the Bonobos brand for $50 million, the company said in a news release. In a statement, a Walmart spokesperson said the company decided "it's the right time to sell Bonobos" after nearly six years. Last February, Bonobos launched Bonobos Fielder – a more affordable riff on the original brand that sold athleisure on its website, Walmart.com and select Walmart stores. Bonobos CEO John Hutchinson will become brand president of Bonobos and report to Baxter after the deal closes.

Walmart previously sold breeding stands that PETA say breeders use to force female dogs to have puppies. These items are now unavailable on walmart.com after PETA filed a complaint last month with the retail giant. PETA said Walmart's removal of the item is "a win for dogs and sets an example of compassion." The item sold for $139.61, and PETA lodged a complaint on February 23 with the company for selling it, according to the New York Post, which also reported that Walmart was the only big-box retail chain selling these devices. Per PETA, certain breeders use these products to force female dogs into repeatedly making puppies.

NEW YORK, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Retailers have a new sweet spot: products that cost $3 to $5. Target said on Tuesday that it would be stocking its shelves with more products priced under $10 as the retailer tries to appeal to more cost-conscious consumers dealing with once-in-a-generation inflation. This comes a little more than a year after dollar store chain Dollar Tree (DLTR.O) said it would launch more discretionary products including seasonal items and apparel priced between the $3 and $5. Many, including high-income households, are buying more store-label brands as budgets stretch in the face of higher interest rates. Target said it plans to launch or expand more than 10 owned brands, adding thousands of new products.
A California company is recalling 2 million Cosori air fryers, US product safety officials announced Thursday. The recalled air fryers were reported as "catching fire, burning, melting." "Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled air fryers and contact Cosori to receive their choice of a free replacement air fryer or another Cosori product," the commission said. The agency said a "wire connection in the air fryers can overheat, posing fire and burn hazards." About 2 million of the air fryers have been sold in the US, while about 250,000 were sold in Canada and 21,000 in Mexico.
Walmart opened up its first pickup-and-delivery-only store in its headquarters city of Bentonville, Arkansas, in 2014. The retailer appears to be abandoning the model by closing the concept's last 2 remaining stores.
